Barks

Have you guys noticed two distinct barks from your mastadors?

Rocco has a very lab-like bark when he wants to play. But when he's "alert" -- like when he sees something he feels might be a danger (or if he's scared) -- he's got a very deep, mastiff-like bark that almost ends in something like a growl. It's a longer bark and drawn out.

Also, I have never heard Rocco really growl before. And he really doesn't bark too often, even when other dogs bark at him. He does bark when we tell him to "speak." Sometimes it seems like he doesn't really like barking, because when we say speak his first bark sometimes is more like a huff of air.

He's a funny dog.

I know exactly what you mean. That bark is hard to describe, it seems to come from somewhere really deep inside their chest cavity and it is a mixture of a bark ,a how and a growl. i had never heard anything like that before he started doing it when he was about 10 months old and now he is doing it is much more often. But only when it is something outside of his comfort zone. Otherwise he is not a huge barker.

Jake only growls in his sleep. You can hear his wine bark in the YouTube video on the homepage or linked here on the right at the Blog.

I have heard the barks I think you are describing from Buford. One is like mastiff's bark, deep and more drawn out. Buford only barks in this way when someone approaches us in a way that makes him feel uneasy. Normally he tries to chase people and is friendly. When I am talking on the phone he has a playful bark which is just trying to get my attention I guess.

Yep. Rocco does that bark only when he's uncomfortable, or like you said, when someone approaches us in a certain way.

The first time I heard him bark like that was also when he was about 9 or 10 months old. We were walking at night down our street, and I saw some guy walking toward us. The guy was about 1 block away. But as we got closer, he suddenly disappeared behind some vans. I didn't see where he went after he went behind the van. I thought, it's probably nothing, but then Rocco just did that deep scary bark. Anyway, freaked me out enough that I decided maybe he's hiding behind the van and might jump out or something (I am, after all, a 5'2" woman, not very threatening).

I figure, if my dog is uneasy about that situation, I probably should be, too. Animals are much better at listening to their instincts.

We have a 9 month old mastador and he has two very different barks as well. When he is playing, he has what we call a "puppy bark". When someone is at the door, he has a very deep almost hound-like bark/growl. He has the best temperament. Love him!
